Chapter 11

Mac and Dominick rush the band from the stage while Sebastian screams for Skyler. He manages to get free in the commotion, turns back in the direction of the chaos, and pushes like a fish upstream through the crowd until his heart stops. Hunter has Skyler in his arms surrounding her, but Graham’s gaze is poised on the floor hovering over a figure lying prone in a puddle of blood.

Brett Stone.

Sebastian reaches for Skyler and pulls her into his body as he looks down at his father, a man he doesn’t know, possibly dying before his eyes.

The security team clears and secures the club within minutes and a medical team arrives with the NYPD. Sebastian insists on riding in the ambulance but will not release Skyler from his grip. Needing to fill the authorities in on the incident, the last thing the King Brothers need is to deal with a lovesick musician, but that seems to be what they’re facing.

Hunter and Graham flag down a cop and point them in the direction of a bulk of muscle, telling them he’ll debrief the situation. Then they climb into the cab of the ambulance with Sebastian and Skyler, the medics, and Brett Stone.

Brett Stone remains unconscious as the medical team works on him on the way to the nearest hospital. Sebastian hears them talking but the words sit idle in his mind, he can’t process what’s happening even in front of his eyes, everything is happening at warp speed but feels like it’s slow motion.

“He’s losing a lot of blood.”

“We need to get him into an OR.”

“He’s crashing, start CPR.”

The ambulance pulls up in front of the emergency entrance and the team jumps out with Brett Stone on a stretcher. Sebastian jumps from the cab and reaches for Skyler. As they run after the medical team, Damian arrives. Sebastian thinks for the first time that he should have called him. He looks back at Hunter and Graham, Hunter nods. Sebastian’s relieved that someone had their head on straight, he must have called Damian without him realizing.

“What the fuck happened?” Damian demands. “Why the fuck was my father at the club? Who was responsible for his security tonight?”

Sebastian explains what he knows, which isn’t anything more than he was on stage, heard shots, then found Brett on the floor in a pool of his own blood.

“Why the fuck was he there without security? God damn it, I told him not to leave his fucking house without security. And where the fuck is my mother?”

Damian storms off to find a doctor for information leaving Sebastian and Skyler in the waiting room. Within minutes, the doors open again and a beautiful woman with blonde hair walks in crying. Jonesie is next to her and he looks pissed off. The woman takes one look at Sebastian and faints. Before Sebastian can reach her, Damian returns and watches as his mother collapses into Jonesie’s arms. “Mother” he yells.

“Get a doctor” Graham yells for assistance and a medic rushes into the waiting room.
